Paragliding in East Tyrol – what you should know as a visitor

The Airpark Lienzer Dolomiten and the wider East Tyrol region rank among Austria’s most renowned flying areas – and for good reason. In a compact area you’ll find numerous stunning launch sites with completely different characters, from relaxed panorama flights to challenging XC thermal flights.

This page is not a pilot handbook. It shows you as a visitor and potential tandem guest how diverse the flying areas in East Tyrol are – and helps you understand paragliding a little better.

A guided tandem flight or fly solo?

Tandem

On a tandem flight with us you fly with an experienced, certified pilot who handles everything: take-off, steering, landing. You need no experience and no gear – just sturdy shoes and a desire to fly. Flight time is approx. 20–30 minutes.

Solo

If you want to fly solo, you’ll need a valid paragliding licence (in Austria: ÖAeC licence) and your own equipment. The Airpark Lienzer Dolomiten offers excellent conditions for licensed pilots – well-prepared launch sites and reliable thermals from May onwards.

When is the best time to fly?

We fly almost all year round – the core season runs from May to October. The best thermal conditions are in early summer (May to July), when the sun heats the slopes and creates stable updrafts.

For tandem guests who prefer a calm pleasure flight, stable weather conditions are ideal: less thermal activity, silky-smooth air and often the clearest visibility of the year. In summer we launch in the morning or late afternoon when the air is calmer.

Our tandem flight areas

Zettersfeld and Hochstein are our launch sites for tandem flights – and at the same time outstanding flying areas for licensed paraglider pilots.

Zettersfeld

2,220 m

Panorama & pleasure

Zettersfeld is our most-flown launch site – and for good reason. From up here you have a 360-degree panorama of the Lienzer Dolomiten, the Schobergruppe and the Hohe Tauern. The launch area is spacious, the ascent by cable car relaxed.

Ideal for: first-timers, families and anyone seeking a calm pleasure flight with maximum views. Landing is directly in the Lienz valley floor – the town literally at your feet.

Hochstein

2,057 m

Up-close Dolomite panorama

Hochstein sits directly above Lienz and offers a dramatic flight along the steep rock faces of the Lienzer Dolomiten. The altitude difference to the landing site is over 1,500 metres – meaning long flight time and breathtaking depth.

Ideal for: guests seeking a more intense flying experience alongside stunning views of the Lienz valley floor. The ascent is by shuttle or taxi along a scenic asphalt road.

Flying areas in the Puster Valley

The Thurntaler and Golzentipp are beautiful XC and pleasure-flying areas for paraglider pilots with their own licence.

Thurntaler

Sillian

Puster Valley panorama

The Thurntaler near Sillian opens up views across the wide Puster Valley and the Carnic Alps. It’s a calm flying area with diverse flying possibilities.

Ideal for: pilots in the upper Puster Valley who prefer a short drive and a relaxed flight experience in less-frequented surroundings.

Golzentipp

Obertilliach

Remote & spectacular

The Golzentipp in Obertilliach is the secret favourite of experienced pilots. Away from the main routes, you experience flying in its purest form: no crowds, maximum openness, untouched mountain landscape.

Ideal for: pilots seeking something special who are happy to accept the slightly longer drive (approx. 38 min from Lienz). The reward: a flying experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Flying areas in the Isel Valley

The Isel Valley is home to some of the most spectacular flying areas in the Alps – high-alpine, untouched and a paradise for experienced pilots.

Goldried – Glocknerblick

Matrei / Kals

XC launch pad & Großglockner panorama

Goldplan – Virgen

Virgen

Pilot community & passion

Ideal for: pleasure pilots and anyone who wants to join a welcoming community. Altitude difference: 1,000 m.

Sajathütte – Prägraten

Prägraten

High-alpine hidden gem

An incredibly beautiful flying area – a paraglider’s paradise and absolute insider tip, best enjoyed with local pilot knowledge. Soaring in the thermals here means flying in the heart of the Alps between steep rock faces, with an unforgettable view of the Großvenediger, Austria’s second-highest peak.

Ideal for: experienced XC pilots, hike-&-fly addicts and pleasure pilots looking for something truly special. Altitude difference: 830–1,280 m.

Alkus

Ainet

Hike & fly · Soaring · Evening thermals

A beautiful small flying area at the entrance to the Isel Valley with a small but very active pilot community. A paradise for hike & fly, soaring at the Schleinitzer Tor or reverse thermals late into the evening. Local pilot knowledge is essential to fully enjoy this area’s potential.

Ideal for: intermediate to experienced pilots who enjoy hike & fly, soaring and XC flights.

More flying areas around East Tyrol

Many more beautiful flying areas can be found in the east of East Tyrol: the Embergealm above Greifenburg in the Drau Valley is an easy, well-developed paraglider’s eldorado. Dellach and Berg in the Drau Valley also offer great launch options.

The Möll Valley is less developed but offers beautiful launch sites at Heiligenblut and the Marterle above Rangersdorf for XC thermal flights, pleasure flying and stunning hike-&-fly possibilities.

Frequently asked questions about paragliding

How safe is a tandem flight?

Very safe. Our pilots are state-certified, have been flying for many years and check conditions before every take-off. Equipment is regularly maintained and replaced per manufacturer guidelines. Additionally, both pilot and passenger carry a rescue system (reserve parachute). We only launch when everything is right – the weather, the gear and your gut feeling.

What should I wear for flying?

Sturdy, ankle-high shoes (hiking boots ideal), long trousers and a windproof jacket. At launch altitude (approx. 2,000 m) it can be chilly even in midsummer. Sunglasses and gloves recommended. We provide the helmet.

Are there photos and videos of the flight?

Yes! Your pilot films the entire flight in HD and takes aerial photos. In the Classic+Media (€ 170), Premium (€ 190) and XXL package (€ 250+) the media package is already included. You get everything on an SD card right after landing.

Is there a weight limit for the tandem flight?

The ideal weight range is 20 to 110 kg. Up to 120 kg a flight is possible on request, depending on wind conditions. Your pilot will discuss this individually with you.

From what age can children fly?

There’s no fixed minimum age – what matters is body weight (from approx. 20 kg) and that your child actually wants to do it. Our pilots are experienced with children and take things especially calmly.

When is the best season for paragliding in East Tyrol?

The core season runs from May to October. Spring and autumn are ideal for relaxed pleasure flights; in summer we launch in the morning or late afternoon for thermal flights. Tip: plan the tandem flight as early in your holiday as possible – that way you have enough buffer in case of weather delays.

Safety & transparency

We’re not an anonymous booking platform – we’re real tandem pilots from East Tyrol. Every flight is personally conducted by one of our experienced, ÖAeC-certified pilots. Our weather-check process starts the evening before: we analyse wind, thermals and cloud cover and inform you between 6 and 7 pm whether your slot is confirmed.

Over 250 reviews with a 5.0 out of 5 rating on Google and TripAdvisor confirm: you’re in good hands with us. And if the weather doesn’t cooperate – no problem. Free rescheduling, any time.
